Press Association Sport and i2i Digital sign deal for automated card recognition system

Press Association Sport, the UK’s leading sports information provider, has agreed a deal with broadcaster i2i Digital, to provide them with an automated card recognition system that simplifies the way card games are produced and broadcast.

i2i Digital signed a contract for the Perlego tracking system to cover the Aussie Poker Hero tournament with a view to covering further tournaments in the future.

The deal offers card recognition technology, a full delivery of graphics and detailed in-game poker statistics.

The Perlego technology uses overhead cameras to read invisible infrared barcodes printed on the back of the playing cards. It omits the need for specialized tables, peep-hole cameras or under rail cameras.

Once the cards are dealt they are immediately recognised and displayed graphically on screen in real time.

For security, each invisible bar code represents a six digit number with over 250,000 possible combinations randomly selected for each card.

Press Association Sport managing director, Ian Campbell said: “Perlego moves us into a new and exciting marketplace. The beauty of this technology lies in its ability to simplify and quicken the production process, while remaining cost effective.

“We are confident that the Perlego system will change the way poker is broadcast in the future and the deal with i2i Digital is testament to that.”

Keith Duddy, Managing Director and Producer from i2i Digital, said: “I’ve been making poker shows for the last six or seven years and have wanted produce something that was far more streamlined. With the Perlego system we come out of the truck with a finished programme – graphics embedded already and a live commentary. It makes post-production much, much simpler.”

Press Association Sport will be demonstrating Perlego live at the ICEi exhibition at Earls Court, 26-28th January 2010, stand number 5490, Hall 1.
