Jekyll Island Authority to Host Revitalization Showcase, January 20th and 21st

WEBWIRE

The Jekyll Island Authority will host a revitalization showcase conference January 20th and 21st to highlight the potential development opportunities available within the Jekyll Island beach village revitalization project. Jekyll Island is a 5,000 acre state-owned barrier island off the coast of Georgia that is approximately midway between Savannah and Jacksonville, just to the south of St. Simons Island and Sea Island and just north of Cumberland Island. Jekyll Island is connected to the mainland city of Brunswick by causeway, and is just 12 miles from Interstate I-95 Exit 29. Jacksonville International Airport is approximately 60 miles away.

The Jekyll Island Authority has completed plans and last month broke ground on the first phase of construction. $50 million in bond funding was appropriated by the Georgia General Assembly and Governor Perdue. Bonds were sold last year and the public funds are secured to fund the construction of a new 78,000 sq. ft. convention center, which will replace the existing convention center. In addition, about 20-acres of park and green space will be integrated with the new convention center along with a new main street through a retail village. The key private-sector development opportunities involve the lodging and retail program. Plans call for several lodging components including a new hotel adjacent to the convention center that will serve both as a primary convention hotel as well as an oceanfront resort. Around 30,000 sq. ft. of retail space is also planned with options for loft condominiums.

The Revitalization Showcase will provide detailed information regarding the plan and possible options. Jekyll Island Authority representatives along with project design team members will be available to discuss the project and answer any questions. Information and registration for the conference is online at jekyllisland.com/showcase or by calling (912) 635-4092.
