(Springfield, MA) - Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) has received the 2009 Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) Gold Well Workplace Award for its commitment to providing a healthy workplace for its employees.

The Well Workplace Award, created by the Wellness Councils of America, is an award program that recognizes organizations for quality and excellence in their worksite health promotion. MassMutual is one of only 60 companies to receive a Gold award from WELCOA in 2009.

“MassMutual is proud to receive such a prestigious recognition of our employee wellness efforts,” says Deb Palermino, Senior Vice President, MassMutual Human Resources. “Through our comprehensive wellness programs, MassMutual strives to ensure that our employees have the tools and resources necessary to live healthier, happier lives. This not only benefits the health and well being of our employees, but it also enables us to increase productivity and better serve our policyholders and clients.”

The award is based on seven benchmarks including senior management support, wellness teams, data collection, operating plans, interventions, supportive environments and outcome evaluations.

“By achieving the Gold level of excellence in workplace wellness programming, MassMutual has demonstrated that it is committed to protecting and enhancing the health and well-being of its most valuable asset – its employees,” says Dr. David Hunnicutt, President of WELCOA. “Through a rigorous evaluation process, MassMutual has joined an elite cadre of organizations that have achieved this designation.”

MassMutual’s integrated wellness program includes onsite wellness activity centers and employee health services clinics at its home office locations in Springfield, Mass. and Enfield Conn. In addition, the company offers online wellness management tools and incentive programs, wellness fairs, a broad range of nutritious cafeteria offerings, and employee education seminars that cover a variety of topics such as work-life balance, weight management and stress relief.

“Providing the best possible wellness resources not only fosters good health for our employees, but it also helps our business,” says Dr. David Artzerounian, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, MassMutual. “Healthier employees translates into a more engaged and productive workforce. In short, good health is good business.”

To date, more than 700 corporations, healthcare systems, public agencies, and educational institutions – employing over 2.25 million people – have been recognized as some of America’s Healthiest Companies. This is MassMutual’s second Well Workplace Award.
