The recession might be over, but there is no doubt that the unemployment rate is still the highest it’s been in years. Most economists agree it will still take several years for the economy to balance out; in the meantime, jobs are continuing to get slashed and those that aren’t getting cut altogether are losing some of the perks once associated with them.

Nobody knows for certain what the future holds. Jobs have been known to be here today, gone tomorrow. Not to mention the fact that everyone wants to retire at a decent age with enough assets to live a comfortable lifestyle. Purchasing an annuity will all but guarantee some income when fixed income is no longer an option.

However, annuities come in many different formats. Some are engineered to provide the best chance of a moderate pay out whereas others are built with a little more risk involved. Immediate annuities allow the investor to receive a pay out immediately after purchasing the annuity for however many years necessary after that. Deferred annuities are purchased further ahead of time and build value over the years before a predetermined date at which time the annuity pays out.

Both immediate and deferred annuities can be purchased in the fixed or variable form. Fixed annuities are stable, conservative options whereas variable annuities live or die based on the market.
