Siemens receives 110 million euro follow-up order from Qatar to further expand the power supply system

Erlangen, Mar 9, 2006, Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD) has been awarded another major order worth around 110 million euros by the Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for a power transmission system expansion project currently in progress in Qatar. The new order comprises the construction of five turnkey substations. Two large orders with a total volume of nearly 500 million euros have already been placed with Siemens in the first quarter of the 2006 fiscal year. All three projects are scheduled for completion by mid-2007.

“This third order in quick succession reflects the enormous trust that Qatar’s power supply company Kahramaa places in us, and again underscores our strengths in the areas of solutions expertise, engineering and project management. An important factor here is the broad spectrum of products and systems from a single source that we can offer our customers for their demanding infrastructure projects,” stated Dr. Jürgen Schloss, member of the Group Executive Management of Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD).

Within a few decades Qatar has developed into a progressive state with a high living standard matched by rapid growth of its energy requirements. The peninsula, situated on the Persian Gulf with its abundant petroleum and natural gas reserves, posts double-digit growth rates and invests continuously in the country’s infrastructure. In 2003 Qatar invited bids for the “Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion – Phase V” project for the expansion of the power supply system of the capital Doha. Siemens PTD was one of the successful bidders at that time, landing an order worth 88 million euros. The two major orders placed in the first quarter of the 2006 financial year among other things comprised the delivery of 14 turnkey substations and the erection of most of the electrical power supply system for the “Westbay” infrastructure project in Qatar.
