New EMC Connectrix ED-10000M Backbone Director Brings Flexibility to Enterprise SANs

WEBWIRE

Hopkinton, Mass.-Wednesday, March 8, 2006, EMC Corporation, the world leader in information management and storage, today announced availability of the EMC® Connectrix® ED-10000M backbone director, which delivers high levels of flexibility to enterprise SANs (storage area networks), helping customers more effectively build an infrastructure for information lifecycle management (ILM).

The new Connectrix system is an OEM version of the award-winning McDATA Intrepid 10000 backbone director (i10k) and is the newest member of the EMC Connectrix family of switches and directors. It enables secure consolidation of multiple SANs, optimized tiered storage and data protection via partitioning from server to storage system. With 256 non-blocking ports, secure fabric and application segmentation and 10Gb/s intelligent connectivity, it gives customers the ability to cost-effectively simplify SAN design, tier multi-vendor fabrics and dynamically move data to meet ever-changing storage and application requirements.

“We’re using four EMC Connectrix ED-10000M backbone directors as part of our overall EMC information infrastructure,” said Mark Adams, IS-Assistant Vice President, Enterprise Rent-A-Car. “We chose the EMC Connectrix ED-10000M because of its port density and the ability to reduce the number of physical switches in our environment through switch partitioning uniquely supported by FlexPars. This platform also helps us align our environment for storage virtualization in the future. EMC and McDATA bring the storage networking experience and reliable products that our environment demands. Their combined depth of expertise and the technological advancements they have realized in this space has made them valuable partners for Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s current and future storage plans.”

As the industry’s premier Fibre Channel and FICON backbone director providing best-in-class availability to meet the needs of even the largest enterprises, the Connectrix ED-10000M can handle both open systems and mainframe requirements. Within its exclusive tiered networking family, the Connectrix ED-10000M complements the industry-proven Connectrix DS-140M director by providing cost-effective distribution layer connectivity. In addition, working with the Connectrix MP-2640M SAN (storage area network) router, the solution enables business continuity and comprehensive backup and recovery.

“EMC and McDATA have worked closely to deliver an advanced backbone director in the EMC Connectrix ED-10000M,” said Marty Lans, EMC Director of Storage Networking. “As customers tier storage and look to consolidate more of their information as part of an ILM strategy, this director will help them intelligently and effectively tier their information.”

“The EMC Connectrix ED-10000M backbone director has gone through extensive testing and qualification to meet the requirements of the most demanding environments,” said Doug Ingraham, Vice President of Product Management, McDATA. “McDATA and EMC have a long history of delivering a wide range of robust directors and switches that combine investment protection, interoperability and tiered storage networking capabilities that enterprise customers demand in order to consolidate, optimize and protect their data.”

The EMC Connectrix family offers the industry’s most extensive selection of networked storage connectivity products, ranging from highly available enterprise-class directors to edge switches and management tools. All Connectrix systems concurrently support multiple hosts and operating systems, enabling multiple servers to connect to multiple storage systems from EMC as well as other vendors. This flexible family of platforms helps facilitate the consolidation of information onto fewer storage systems for improved management, protection and availability.

The Connectrix ED-10000M is available immediately from EMC and its Velocity channel partners.
