The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 3% to 14% of all lung cancers worldwide are caused by radon. Natural radon levels across the Western United States can vary considerably. Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the natural decay of uranium. It also happens to be a colorless, odorless and chemically inert gas that cannot be detected by human senses.

Long-term exposure to radon can cause cancer according to the Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Lung Association and the National Academy of Sciences. The EPA reports that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and is connected with up to 22,000 deaths each year.

The states of Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Washington, California and Nevada all have regions that are considered a Zone 1 area for high radon potential (probable indoor radon average greater than 4pCi/L). Zone 1 is considered the highest priority and was determined by the EPA and U.S. Geological Survey.

The cool fall and winter months are considered an ideal time to have a home or property tested for radon. During these times buildings are typically sealed to keep the property heated and this closed environment can increase radon levels.
