Governor Appoints East Brunswick Man to New Jersey Massage Therapy Board

Mark Carangelo of East Brunswick, New Jersey, has been appointed to the State’s first Massage and Bodywork Therapy Licensing Board by New Jersey Governor, Jon Corzine, in response to the 2008 passage of the Massage and Bodywork Therapist Licensing Act. Carangelo is vice chairman of the board and the only massage therapy school owner appointed to the board.

New Jersey has been seeking to establish licensing for massage therapy. Forty-one states and the District of Columbia have previously enacted legislation recognizing massage as a health profession. Despite the State’s prior reluctance to recognize massage therapy, Carangelo is determined to raise the public’s perception of massage therapy in New Jersey to the level of respect enjoyed by therapists in other states.

Carangelo states that he and the Board are already hard at work to fulfill their mission, saying, “We are working diligently to write rules and regulations to aid all massage therapists and also protect public interests.“

He further states that “the massage therapy board will benefit consumers by raising education and entry level standards for the practice of massage therapy, thereby inspiring confidence and protecting the public from uneducated and unscrupulous therapists.“

Mark Carangelo is the owner of the American Institute of Alternative Medicine (AIAM), located on 555 Route 18 in East Brunswick, New Jersey. AIAM has been in business since 1997 and is approved by the New Jersey Department of Education and the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

According to Carangelo, “AIAM students work with the New York Jets on a weekly basis, benefiting the team while developing the much needed skills of students about to enter the profession.”
