California School District’s Students and Faculty Celebrate the End of Mold Repairs

Recently in Salinas, California there was a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the end of two years worth of projects to stop water intrusions problems in classrooms at several schools, all located in one school district. The ceremony was held at one of the remediated school’s cafeteria and was attended by many happy students, teachers and school administrators.

According to the school district the major repair project was done “to ensure the safety of all our students.” Numerous teachers and students were affected by the ongoing repairs, but the projects have been successfully completed. Additional projects in multipurpose rooms in the same school district are ready to begin pending Board approval.

When a water intrusion event happens from rain, broken plumbing or elevated humidity levels in a school it is imperative to not only fix the problem right away, but also to address any microbial growth. Mold only takes 24 to 48 hours to begin to grow under these types of conditions.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), “…excessive moisture and standing water contribute to the growth of mold in homes and other buildings.” The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that “Molds have the potential to cause health problems. Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins).”
