Newspaper production in Malta goes digital with KODAK Technology and gains support of leading European publishers

Rochester, NY -- Malta-based Miller Newsprint Ltd uses a KODAK VERSAMARK VL4200 Printing System to print leading European newspapers such as The Financial Times, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Sunday Mirror, The People, Daily Star, Daily Express, The Daily Mirror and The Daily and Sunday Telegraph for tourists and residents of the Maltese Islands. Miller Newsprint Ltd is part of the Miller Malta Group and a major shareholder in Newsfax International in London, the UK’s largest independent newspaper contract printer. With the investment in the KODAK VERSAMARK VL4200 System, Miller Newsprint’s sales volume has increased 50 percent.

“Our investment in the VERSAMARK VL4200 Printing System means we can print newspapers digitally and radically change newspaper production and distribution in Malta,” said Malcolm Miller, CEO of Miller Newsprint Ltd. “The KODAK Technology means we can supply newspapers around the clock to more than 1,000 outlets across the Maltese Islands. A key part of this investment is our relationship with Kodak – the company’s support and commitment are superb.”

There is a large international population in Malta, both tourist and resident. Previously, Miller Distributors used air freight to transport newspaper titles. But by printing the titles digitally on the island using the VERSAMARK VL4200 System, Miller Newsprint can ensure that the full range of newspapers is available first thing each morning.

Miller Malta Group has retail operations across Malta, with five outlets at Malta International Airport, in addition to strategically located bookstores, kiosks and convenience stores. The company also hand delivers newspapers to hotels, offices, and homes around the islands.

“The VERSAMARK VL4200 System has given us the option to change the way we do things – digital technology is the way forward,” said Miller. “With the easy transfer of PDF files and digital printing systems like the VL4200, newspapers can now be printed locally for a global market. With the KODAK System, we have the capacity to increase the number of titles available and provide a wider choice. We can print tomorrow’s newspaper and have it ready for distribution before dawn.”

“Miller Newsprint is the latest example of how the capabilities of the KODAK VERSAMARK VL-Series Systems help printers capitalize on emerging market trends and open new revenue opportunities, at a low total cost of ownership,” said Kevin Joyce, Worldwide Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Digital Printing Solutions, Kodak.

The KODAK VERSAMARK VL4200 Printing System operates at 410 fpm (125 mpm) at a resolution of 600x360 dpi. It comes with a range of productivity-boosting features, such as continuous ink replenishment during production so that jobs can run continuously.

“The VERSAMARK VL4200 System is the most cost-effective press on the market, and always delivers excellent quality – the first copy and the last are always perfect. There is already talk of using the KODAK Technology and adopting a similar printing strategy in up to six other locations in Europe,” Miller concluded.
