The Center for Science in the Public Interest Lists 10 Riskiest Foods

Earlier this month the Center for Science in the Public Interest came out with a list of the ten riskiest foods for consumers to eat. They included, beginning with the riskiest: leafy greens, eggs, tuna, oysters, potatoes, cheese, ice cream, tomatoes, sprouts and berries.

The foods were ranked by the number of food-borne illness outbreaks associated with each group over the past 20 years. Leafy greens topped the list with 363 outbreaks and 13,568 reported illnesses. The top ten list included more than 1,500 outbreaks and almost 50,000 illnesses.

The food-borne illnesses ranged from minor stomach ailments to death and included pathogens ranging from bacteria to toxins. All ten food items are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and combined accounted for 40% of all food-borne outbreaks linked to FDA-regulated foods.
