EMSL Analytical offers air testing solutions to school districts concerned with both indoor and outdoor air quality.

Westmont, NJ, October 6th, 2009

Recently the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that they would begin monitoring outdoor air around schools for toxic air pollutants, or air toxics. The EPA selected 63 schools in 22 states and just this month posted the first data from one of four schools picked in the New York and New Jersey areas.

The monitoring is designed to help the EPA and states involved learn whether there are any health concerns from the outdoor air around schools. The first set of data from the New York school was recently posted to the EPA’s website.

Contaminants in the outdoor air being monitored include 4,4-Methylenedianiline, carbonyls, hexavalent chromium, diisocyanates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and various metals. These contaminants can all cause health issues for students and faculty when exposed to enough of the contaminants.

The New York City school chosen was Intermediate School 143 which is located in a heavily congested part of the city. This particular school is being monitored for VOCs and preliminary data shows that contaminants are below levels of short-term concern.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest environmental testing laboratories, has been involved with air quality testing since 1981. The laboratory has a long tradition of working with both the EPA and school districts from across the country.

The outdoor air testing around schools will take 60 days at each location with a minimum of 10 daily samples during the monitoring phase. “The safety of our school children is one of the highest priorities for our nation,” reported Joe Frasca, Executive Vice President for EMSL Analytical. “In the past a great deal of interest has been focused on indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools and it is important to see the outdoor air also being addressed,” Frasca continued.
