New Arkansas Law Could Slow Home Sales & Mold Inspections

LA Testing stands ready to help process mold samples if a backlog of samples develops from the new regulations.

Pasadena, CA, October 6th, 2009

A new law is set to go into effect in Arkansas on January 1st that would require anyone performing mold investigations to be licensed by the state and some area residents are concerned that not enough inspectors can readily meet the new licensing requirements. Under the new law only individuals licensed by the state can report to homeowners if they have mold in their property.

To be licensed mold investigators will need to be a certified industrial hygienist by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, or certified by the American Council for Accredited Certification (also known as the American Indoor Air Quality Council) as a microbial consultant, or have completed 20 or more hours of college courses in microbiology. Individuals will then also have to register and pay a fee with the state.

At the present time indoor air quality (IAQ) investigators, home inspectors and pest control professionals typically are the ones reporting to homeowners when mold is found in their properties. The good news is these Arkansas mold professionals have three months to meet the qualifications and a number of them could become certified by the American Council for Accredited Certification if they begin the process soon.

Some real estate professionals fear a delay in property transfers if enough qualified inspectors are not available by the implementation of the new law. LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of mold testing services, has prepared their laboratories to efficiently process any backlog of samples that may develop from the new regulations. “LA Testing is ready to make sure we can do all that is possible to rapidly process samples that come out of Arkansas,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical.
