Florida Health Insurance - Cover Florida Plan Fills Gap But Falls Short, Says Broker

MIAMI -- Florida’s health insurance program, started by Governor Crist, was created for the 3.8 million Floridians currently living without health insurance; while it provides minimal health care coverage, there are better value options available.

Florida health insurance broker, Morgan Moran, said: “Several Florida insurance companies now offer better insurance plans for the money. The Governor’s Cover Florida health insurance plan was created before the current economic situation; since then, many Floridian’s have lost their jobs, and coverage, making them ineligible for the Cover Florida plan. ”

Cover Florida Health Care created two affordable health care plans that provide coverage for individuals age 19 - 64, who have not had health insurance in the last 6 months. ”For those who qualify, Cover Florida Plan can provide basic coverage, which is better than no coverage at all; but anyone losing their job recently will not be included in the plan,” Moran said. ”All of the top insurance companies are now coming to the table with new, affordable health insurance plans that do not include that 6 month provision.”

There are two Insurance Plans available. Cover Florida (1) is a limited benefit plan that offers preventive and routine care. Benefits include coverage for physician and specialist services, urgent care center visits and lab work. The other Cover Florida option, Plan (2) is also a limited benefit plan. It combines preventive and routine care with hospital and surgical coverage. According to the web site, both offer prescription drug coverage and basic and preventive dental benefits including twice annual cleanings, & oral exams.

Moran compared the Cover Florida plans with several others and said, “Cover Florida provides adequate health coverage, but falls short of its goal to provide the lowest cost insurance.” The health insurance broker also commented on the positives of the Cover Florida Plan, saying “there are no medical tests or histories to provide, you are guaranteed enrollment after you meet their eligibility requirements, and you can visit any health care provider you want.”
