NY Career Counselor Says Social Networking Can Be Wasteful for Senior Level Executives

NY career counselors, David Werner International, say Social Networking can be dangerous for senior level executives seeking new employment. David Werner International offers senior outplacement and career marketing services for senior level executives.

Social networking has become a rite of passage in today’s world of e-communication. For unemployed senior executives, however, using these sites could prove to have damaging consequences for future career opportunities.

David Werner International warns unemployed senior executives to avoid posting their personal activities, thoughts, and comments on many of these sites. According to David Werner, president of David Werner International, “It is common for many corporations to now look to the Internet for information on prospective candidates. It’s extremely important for senior level executives to be mindful of photos or personal information they post to sites like MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. It can come back to bite them, even many years later.”

David Werner himself was a victim of Facebook fraud on his personal account that he shared with his family. Earlier this year, Mr. Werner received a warning from Facebook that stated, “Our systems indicate that your Facebook account has been compromised by cybercriminals attempting to impersonate you. These criminals often will try to trick your friends into sending them money by claiming that you are stuck in a far away location and need assistance.”

Many social networking sites like LinkedIn and Naymz are specifically geared towards business professionals, but Werner feels that they have marginal value for the highest ranking Presidents and Vice Presidents. According to Werner, “It’s not to say I am completely against these sites. I think they can serve a purpose on some levels and I have experimented with many. High ranking seniors just need to be extra careful about what they place on the Internet and where. That said, I could make a case for very judicious use of LinkedIn - if only because Executive Recruiters I am told scout for leads through its 40 million member data base. More to the point, I would like to hear from a senior executive who got his job through LinkedIn. Anyone out there?”

Werner is in favor of using the Internet to accelerate career opportunities, like creating an online resume, like the ones utilized by his executive search firm for career marketing.

David Werner’s online portfolio is a personalized web marketing tool for candidates seeking accelerated results and reduced employment transition periods. The multi-media system is a virtual showcase of a candidate’s history and proven success record. This can be seen at http://www.careertalent.net/dwic/video/index.html

Werner adds, ”Candidates who can use appropriate Internet technology to show case their potential will have a competitive edge over the rest. Getting noticed in today’s market shuffle is becoming increasingly more difficult, but social networking sites don’t have the power high ranking executives need to make the right impression on future employers.”
