Breast screening errors at East Lancs hospital frighteningly similar to Trafford cases

A solicitor whose firm handled several cases from breast screening misreporting at Trafford General Hospital in 2003 to 2005 says the situation at East Lancashire NHS Trust is frighteningly similar. Emma Holt, Head of Clinical Negligence at Manchester solicitors, Pannone LLP said, “An Independent Review of the breast screening assessment clinics at East Lancs NHS Trust has led to over 85 women being recalled to review their mammograms following concerns regarding the performance of one consultant radiologist’s work at the Trust. The review has identified a number of misreported cases and 18 women have since been diagnosed with breast cancer, 14 of which have invasive breast cancer. The Trust today confirmed that these women had their cancer diagnosed later than should have otherwise been the case.

“Pannone successfully recovered compensation for a number of women who experienced delays in diagnosing breast cancer as a result of the misreporting of mammograms at Trafford General Hospital. In the current situation it is of primary importance that the women affected in East Lancashire now receive an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Where their prognosis has been affected because of any delay in diagnosis, the women affected may have a medical negligence compensation claim and should seek specialist advice. ”

She added finally, “It is of some concern to see further mistakes being made yet again in respect of breast screening which is a vital part of breast cancer prevention and treatment. My sympathies go out to the women affected as we know from experience having dealt with such cases over the years that having a late diagnosis of breast cancer can lead to a range of emotions from resignation to anger and the need for an explanation as to why this occurred”.
