BLUE WAVE Foundation to Support World Suicide Prevention Day

WEBWIRE

CALGARY, Alberta - CANADA (September 2, 2009) - World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10th, BLUE WAVE Foundation in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day, is being supported at 4Refuel’s First Annual Charitable Golf Tournament. The charity golf tournament will take place at Calgary’s # 1 Links-style golf course, Silverwing on the NE Corner of Barlow Trail and 48th Ave., NE Calgary.

This event is taking place aiming to break the silence surrounding mental health and suicide with increased public awareness, confronting stigma in society and encouraging concern and participation for these important public health problems.

This event and others will be taking place on September 10th, in communities across Canada, and indeed the world, to unite and show support toward asking our government to initiate – as a matter of priority, a national strategy for suicide prevention.

BLUE WAVE Foundation is a non-profit, registered, charitable society specifically formed to assist youth, specifically 15-24 year olds (the highest at risk group) and concerned parents with information and resources regarding the challenges surrounding mental health. BLUE WAVE “action” programs are to introduce annual BLUE WAVE Days into junior high and high schools, hold BLUE WAVE Events regionally with long term plans to create/build BLUE WAVE Centres – facilities, a place of safety, help and hope; a type of “half-way house” between home and hospital.

Every year in Canada approximately 4,000 Canadians die by suicide. Over 100,000 Canadians have died by suicide over the past three decades. Canada’s suicide rate ranks in the top third among 82 countries. Close to 3,000,000 Canadians have been affected by the harmful and often devastating affects of suicidal behaviour. No one is immune. This tragedy is compounded by the knowledge that suicide remains the most preventable source of death in Canada. Canada must end the silence. Canada must approach suicide as a public health issue and adopt, as most other developed countries have already, a national strategy for preventing suicides. There is no health without mental health!
