Top ranked Andrew Jackson University scored a perfect 10 in the value category and 9.88 in support. When asked how his institution garnered such high scores in these categories, Andrew Jackson University president Don Kassner commented that the school’s strategy was to provide the best education at the most reasonable price and to wow students with over-the-top student service and support.
Kassner said, “We know we don’t yet have a brand name that’s widely recognized, so we have to do some extraordinary things to grow our enrollment.” Asked what these extraordinary things might be, he replied, “It’s a simple formula. We reduce costs without compromising academic rigor and emphasize developing relationships with our students. And we pass on the cost savings to our students while adding scholarship programs and sponsored tuition.”
Kassner also pointed out that Andrew Jackson University received a score of 9.5 in the technology category. “We don’t overwhelm students with bells and whistles just to be cool, and we make sure the technology we do use is easy to master.” He cited the university’s proprietary webcam-based online exam proctoring service as an example of using technology to make things more convenient for students.
Knowing that most students enroll in an online program for the convenience it provides, Kassner’s team saw that locating a proctor to supervise exams was an inconvenience for students. Andrew Jackson University set out to rectify the situation and developed unique but easy-to-use technology in their ProctorU service, which provides live online proctors on a schedule set by the student. “We’ve done about 2,000 of these proctored exams so far,” said Kassner, “and it’s been so successful that we’re now doing it for other schools.” No surprise then that their students rank them Number One
