Scotland’s Cameronian Web Site Launches Digital Archive

WEBWIRE

This week the official web site of The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) has been enhanced with a series of digital editions of the regiment’s annual magazine - The Covenanter.

Formed in 1881 by the amalgamation of two other Scottish regiments: the 26th Cameronian Regiment (1689) and the 90th Perthshire Light Infantry (1794), The Cameronians was an infantry regiment of the British Army and the only Rifle Regiment amongst the Scottish regiments of infantry. Although the regiment was disbanded in the 1968 the Trustees have maintained an annual Regimental Journal, The Covenanter, containing stories and tributes to many of the men who served in the Cameronians.

In 2006, the regimental web site was launched. Intended to establish an online presence in memory of this famous Scottish regiment the web site - www.cameronians.org - receives thousands of visits each month from people looking to find out more about The Cameronians and in particular about family members who served in this famous Scottish Regiment.

The Covenanter has been published as an annual journal since May 1921. Earlier this year, Editor and former Cameronian Major Brian Leishman M.B.E. commissioned a series of digital editions of The Covenanter covering the years 2002 to 2008.

Major Leishman is quoted as saying: “These digital versions enable visitors to search the entire magazine in seconds, giving them a new lease of life and through this modern internet technology putting even more information about the regiment and its history into the online public domain.”

The Digital Editions can be accessed at: http://www.cameronians.org/covenanter/index.html
