Paper Manufacturer Depends on Kenworth Trucks To Deliver Environmentally-Friendly Products
HOQUIAM, Wash., August 25, 2009 – At Grays Harbor Paper, the focus is on producing high quality, recycled paper in a sustainable, environmentally-friendly manner. To deliver its paper products to customers, the company’s Barrier West dedicated transportation fleet depends upon quality Kenworth trucks.
“Grays Harbor Paper is one of the few companies in North America that makes 100 percent recycled content paper and uses biomass wood waste to generate steam and electricity to make it a carbon neutral manufacturing process,” said Bill Quigg, president of Grays Harbor Paper in Hoquiam, Wash.
Using one ton of the company’s 100 percent recycled Harbor 100 – instead of virgin forest paper – saves over 14 million BTUs, 10,000 gallons of water, 2,200 pounds of greenhouse gases, and 1,100 pounds of solid waste, according to Quigg. Harbor 100 is Forest Stewardship Council and Green-e certified paper (www.ghplp.com).
The Barrier West fleet includes 12 Kenworth T800s, which transport up to 32 tons of paper products per load from the company’s mill to end users and distribution centers for municipal and state government agencies, office supply stores, and warehouse and wholesale club stores. The company’s paper products are often purchased by customers committed to sustainable practices, such as Nike, REI, the cities of Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Santa Monica, Calif.; and the states of Washington and California.
“We depend on Kenworth trucks to deliver our products to customers on time,” said Quigg. “For over 30 years, I’ve been involved in businesses that have owned and operated Kenworth trucks, which are durable, reliable and hold their value. Their performance has been excellent.”
The company’s newest T800s are equipped with 2007 550-hp Cummins ISX engines with 1,650 lb-ft of torque at 2,100 rpm run through 18-speed manual transmissions. “We saw this as an opportunity to show our leadership by doing what’s right for the environment and proudly running 2007 clean diesel engines in our Kenworth trucks,” said Quigg, who plans to buy new Kenworth models with 2010 engine technology when it becomes available next year.
“Kenworth Northwest in Aberdeen (Wash.) helped us to specify our Kenworth trucks with the right equipment and get exactly what we wanted,” said Quigg. The forest-green T800s include chromed bumpers, fuel tanks and accessories to project a premium image. “We also very much appreciate the dealership’s high level of service and parts support, which is critical to keeping all our trucks moving,” he added.
Kenworth’s quality products, combined with excellent dealer support from dealers such as Kenworth Northwest, contributed to Kenworth receiving 2009 J.D. Power and Associates awards for “Highest in Customer Satisfaction for Heavy Duty Dealer Service and for Over the Road and Vocational Segment Class 8 Trucks.”*
Quigg’s family also operates a sand, gravel and construction firm with 18 trucks, mostly Kenworth T800s and a few Kenworth W900s.
