Research Firm Reports Toshiba’s Market-Leading Position for Q4 2005.

IRVINE, Calif., February 27, 2006 – Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD), the industry pioneer in mobile hard disk drives (HDDs), topped all HDD manufacturers in consumer electronics (CE) HDD shipments for the fourth quarter of 2005, according to research firm IDC, marking the company’s second consecutive market-leading position.
Toshiba’s line of 2.5-inch, 1.8-inch and 0.85-inch HDDs are key components in popular consumer electronics and automotive applications. According to IDC, in Q4, Toshiba had a global market share of 31 percent for all HDDs shipped into CE, and an impressive 50 percent share in the mobile CE category, which includes all 2.5-inch, 1.8-inch, 1-inch and 0.85-inch drives.
“Having the right storage solution is the key to making consumer electronics markets happen,” said Scott Maccabe, vice president and general manager, Toshiba Storage Device Division. “Today’s consumers want to carry large volumes of digital content. Toshiba’s leadership in the 1.8-inch HDD category, along with new technologies like perpendicular recording, have enabled us to deliver the right combination of high-capacity storage across all mobile HDD platforms. We’re executing solidly from our 2.5-inch family down to the tiny 0.85-inch HDD, which will offer up to 10GB of capacity by 2007.”

Toshiba is a leading HDD supplier for key CE applications such as mobile PCs, portable GPS navigation systems, digital audio players, portable media players and automobile entertainment systems. Thanks to its industry-leading position on perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), Toshiba is continuing to offer CE design engineers new options for high-capacity, small form factor storage. Toshiba recently began shipping an 80GB 1.8-inch HDD based on PMR. Toshiba also is the world’s leading supplier of automotive-class HDDs with more than 80 percent market share according to TSR. The company recently announced its fifth-generation automotive-class HDD at 40GB with improved temperature specification of -30o to 85o Celsius.
“Consumers want their content portable, and the 79 percent increase in shipments of mobile disk drives into consumer devices in 2005 over 2004 is evidence of this dynamic,” said John Rydning, IDC’s research manager over hard disk drives. “IDC attributes this growth to a combination of innovative disk drive designs and effective integration of HDD technology into consumer devices by companies like Toshiba.”
