New GenMax Harmonic Suppression System Maximizes Operating Efficiency and Energy Cost Savings for Multiple Parallel Generators

In explaining the need for the GenMax, Richard Bell, President of Harmonics Limited, described the problem being solved as one where multiple generators of different winding pitches are paralleled. This pitch differential leads to 3rd harmonic currents which in turn result in high 3rd harmonic currents flowing in the grounding system. If there is a ground fault shunt trip breaker protecting the generator, it will open long before the generator can reach full capacity. Since the NEC (2008) requires full load testing of critical system loads, the 3rd harmonic current can prevent the paralleled generator from reaching the required load capacity.

Installing a GenMax unit blocks the formation of the 3rd harmonic current and allows proper paralleling of the generators. GenMax prevents the premature tripping of the breaker that keeps the generator from operating to its maximum capacity. This new solution allows multiple generators with differences in winding pitch to operate efficiently at full capacity by reducing 3rd harmonic ground current to just a few amperes. Both generator operating time and energy cost savings are maximized.
