AT&T, Communications Workers of America Reach Tentative Agreement in West Contract Negotiations

WEBWIRE

Dallas, Texas, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) today announced that it has reached a tentative agreement with the Communications Workers of America in the core wireline contract negotiations in CWA District 9 (AT&T’s West Region) covering approximately 23,000 employees in California and Nevada.

The agreement, which will be submitted to the district’s membership for a ratification vote in coming days, is the second to be reached with a bargaining unit representing AT&T core wireline workers. The Midwest Region (CWA District 4) ratified a new contract agreement in a vote announced Friday, Aug. 7. The contracts expired on April 4 and employees have worked under the terms of the expired contract while negotiations continued.

Bill Blase, senior executive vice president-Human Resources, praised the negotiating teams on both sides for their work in reaching a tentative agreement during tough economic times and a period of significant changes in AT&T’s wireline business.

“We’re pleased that we now have a tentative agreement in another large region,” Blase said. “That’s proof that even with the challenges we face in the current economy, the company and the union can work together to maintain good union jobs with wages and benefits that are among the best in the country.”

Negotiations are continuing in other regions where contracts expired on April 4, as they did in Midwest and West. They include East (CWA District 1), Southwest (CWA District 6) and Legacy T (CWA ComTech unit). Negotiations are also continuing for Core Wireline contracts with the IBEW for employees mostly in Illinois and northwestern Indiana, where contracts expired June 27, and in the Southeast Region (CWA District 3), where contracts expired Aug. 8.

A total of about 120,000 employees are covered under the various contracts.
