BabyFit.com Launches New Corporate Wellness Program for Pregnant Women

CINCINNATI, OH -- 01/12/2005 -- BabyFit.com, an online fitness and nutrition program for pregnant women, today launched a new service that enables corporations to offer an online pregnancy health management program as a part of their employee wellness package.

“Not only does this program benefit women by helping them to have a healthier pregnancy, but it also helps employers better manage and reduce the direct and indirect costs associated with hospital charges for newborns,” said Sean McCosh, Vice President of Marketing and Partnerships for BabyFit.com. “Hospital costs for healthy, full-term pregnancies are significantly lower than costs related to pregnancies with complications. Premature births are not always preventable, even among healthy women, but proper nutrition and exercise can help reduce the incidence of preclampsia and gestational diabetes, conditions which have been linked to prematurely.”

On average, hospital charges for newborns without complications run $1,300, while costs for hospital stays for infants with a principal diagnosis of prematurity average $75,000. Employers and other private health plans are responsible for half the total hospital bill for prematurity.

Recent studies show that exercising during pregnancy brings many benefits to mom and baby, with a quicker recovery and fewer complications including premature births -- which would allow women to return to work faster, if they chose too, according to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In addition, the American Journal of Sports Medicine reports women that exercised reduce the likelihood of operative delivery (cesarean section or forceps) from 48 percent to 14 percent.

The BabyFit.com program includes personalized guidance on nutrition and fitness through a range of resources including animated demonstrations for pregnancy safe exercises, instant access to calorie and nutrient data, healthy meal plans and shopping lists, access to health and pregnancy experts, and active community message boards. The program is immediately available to corporations, and typically costs $10-15.00 per employee, depending on the size of the covered population.
