Historical Novel Set in 1800s Boston Features a Story of Adventure and Self-Discovery

Betty Arnold, a theater actress, sets out to find her own destiny in Shirley Sprague’s novel, Morning 1808: Boston Harbor.

Morning 1808 begins with an English theater troupe lead by Mrs. Elizabeth Arnold. The troupe is hired by Charles Stuart Powell to star in the reopening of the Boston theater. As the troupe debuts on stage, Betty, Mrs. Arnolds daughter, becomes entangled with John Howard Payne. Betty makes her own debut on stage, receiving favorable feedback. Soon after, a tragic accident kills her mother. Betty is left to figure out her future and survive on her own.

Sprague creates an entertaining story set in 1800s America. The protagonist, Betty, is a young woman who who’s suddenly thrown into the real world after her mother’s death. Betty’s journey is riddled with twist and turns—a secret affair, two marriages, and birthing three children—one being Edgar Allan Poe.

The book was featured in the 2016 Frankfurt Book Fair last October 19 to 23 at the Frankfurt Trade Fair, Germany.
