“We all have something that works against our potential, success, achievement, and the realization of our dreams. Supplying such resources as mentoring, tutoring, financial assistance, success counseling, and others has proven to be valuable strategies in addressing. . . challenges, but the current plight of African American men and other young men of color reminds us that more is needed.”

LitFire Publishing participated in this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair. The event was held on October 19–23, 2016, at Messe Frankfurt (Frankfurt Trade Fair) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Among the books showcased by LitFire’s booth was Dr. Oscar J. Dowdell-Underwood’s Bumblebees Can Fly: Empowering Young Men of Color.

In the book, Dr. Dowdell-Underwood explains the relationship between marginalization, perceptions of mattering, and achievement among young men of color by using natural and social science research. He also provides strategies for parents, educators, government, policymakers, community leaders, and nonprofit organizations to help remedy the marginalization of colored individuals.

Dr. Dowdell-Underwood says in Bumblebees Can Fly, “We all have something that works against our potential, success, achievement, and the realization of our dreams. Supplying such resources as mentoring, tutoring, financial assistance, success counseling, and others has proven to be valuable strategies in addressing. . . challenges, but the current plight of African American men and other young men of color reminds us that more is needed.”
