A Masterpiece About Culture, Life, and Dolls Has Dazzled The Flock of NYSRA Conference

Book lovers have gathered last November - to attend the NYSRA Conference held in Rochester, NY. The people were mesmerized by a Navajo Doll inspired story from the author’s life experiences. The book, “Double Doll: Turning Myself Upside Down” is the first book of Sharleen Daugherty’s Memoir Trilogy. As expected, the people’s interest about the book has been hightened as they try to ask questions about the masterpiece.

The author revealed that the doll became a symbol of her journey into the world of the Navajo and the manifestation of her childhood prayer: “Please God, turn me upside down and make me an Indian.” The book carries the story of her early years that lead to a life-changing event and the formation of her new business with a mission to promote American arts through the sale of Amish quilts and Navajo wearings. More than the story of the author, the book is a real inspiration when it comes to culture promotion, This is the essence of the book that delighted the readers on the book exhibit.

“The Double Doll” is a symbol of Sharleen’s life and it represents the fact that there are a lot of cultures in this world, and each of us should learn to respect others culture and be proud of our own. Most of all, every person in this world is able to turn his/her own life upside down, may it be because of problems, happiness, surprises, and others.

The book, “Double Doll: Turning Myself Upside Down” was displayed at newly completed New York State Reading Association held at the Hyatt Regency, Rochester, NY last November 13, 2016.

About the Author
Sharleen Daugherty grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She left the Land of Enchantment in 1959 to pursue her education and career as a computer applications consultant. She held a variety of jobs on the East Coast that ultimately led to owning and managing Business Systems Solutions, Inc. By 1994 Daugherty had sold her computer consulting business, moved to Colorado, and started the Durango Trading Company. The mission of her new company was to promote American arts through the sale of Amish quilts and Navajo weavings. In 2005 Daugherty received an MFA in Creative Nonfiction Writing from Goucher College in Towson, Maryland, and began to write about her experiences with the Navajo people. She currently lives with her husband and two dogs in Silver City, New Mexico.
