Modern furniture can be comfortable, warm, and elevate everyday living.

You might recognize Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design’s work if you’ve stepped foot in Ponce City Market, sipped a latte at some of Atlanta’s finest coffee roasters, or enjoyed a meal at one of the many well designed + well esteemed restaurants around the Southeast. Until recently however, if you wanted to sit on a Skylar Morgan stool or congregate around one of the furniture-maker’s live-edge tables, you’d have to leave the house. Fortunately for the love of all things modern, the studio has recently unveiled a hardworking, everyday furniture line—one they showed off this week at the inaugural ICFF Miami.

A collection of warm, modern pieces in walnut, oak and ash, amplified simply with black and white metals and handmade brass hardware, these are furnishings meant to be lived with, loved and worn in. “Modern furniture can be comfortable, warm, and elevate everyday living,” says Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design’s Skylar Morgan. “Which to us feels like a twist on the typical ‘modern’ idea. The line is simple and minimal but not just made to be admired. We expect life to happen over and around these tables, chairs and other pieces.”

Long a close partner of a handful of prime Atlanta architects, builders and restauranteurs, Morgan boasts a resume that hosts quite an all-star cast including The Optimist, St. Cecilia, Ponce City Market’s William Sonoma, and outdoor benches and storefronts at Atlanta’s Westside Provisions District. Given that experience, it’s no surprise the studio would transfer their “everyday modern” ideology to welcoming furnishings refined enough for the most tasteful home, but hard-wearing enough to take the punishment of family living.

In the new line, matte woods lend a casual functionality to tables and bookcases. Powder-coated steel and wooden seats give heft to bar and counter-height stools. A natural edge and “bare”, unpainted feet shift a chunky dining table from business to casual. “We love paying homage to the materials themselves and mixing them,” says Morgan. “Using textures and simplified metals, highlighting subtle details with the highest quality materials. The vibe is modest and hardworking, but designed to make the everyday special.”
