Set in 1949 Romania, Ada Nicolescu’s book Four Hundred Bones: Stalin’s Teeth in Academia is a promising addition to her repertoire. The book chronicles the effects of the Communist dictatorship on the scholars and the academe a few years after World War II. It was featured in LitFire’s booth during the prestigious BookExpo America, held last May 11 to 13 in Chicago, Illinois.

This work of fiction takes readers to a school of medicine in Bucharest, Romania. With the takeover of the Communists, all Western books are banned. Amid the chaos and pressure to submit, Peter, a science-loving technician, works his way out of the hypocrisy of the current authority figures. He wills himself not to give in to the rules upheld by the Communist leaders who used to be Fascist in the past Nazi dictatorship.

Four Hundred Bones is a “fascinating view into Stalinist Romania,” an Amazon reviewer says. Through the author’s unique and informative writing, readers are taken into an enthralling read all the way to the last page. The book is recommended to fiction, history, and mystery aficionados.
