Neumob Reports Soaring Usage of Mobile Travel Apps, Yet Widespread Frustration With App Speeds

63% of consumers report deleting travel apps from smartphones due to slow load times and poor performance

Sunnyvale, CA, USA – WEBWIRE

The competition within various travel app categories is fierce, and it continues to put a premium on greater customer satisfaction as the primary means for higher revenues and retention rates. App developers and owners are now finding out just how fickle travel app consumers can be, especially when their apps can’t cut it on slow networks, during peak congestion hours or even on crowded public WiFi".

Neumob, the global leader in app acceleration for a mobile-first world, today announced results from exclusive consumer research that underscores the close links between mobile travel app performance and customer retention.

In a new white paper and study,Travel Apps - How We Got To Now,” the company reports on both primary and secondary research that illustrates the seismic shift from desktop travel booking & research to consumer preferences for booking and researching travel through mobile apps on their smartphones. eMarketer has reported that 2016 will be the first year that more than half of travel consumers will use mobile apps to book travel, and Neumob’s study found that a whopping 82% of surveyed US/UK consumers had used an app to book airline, hotel or train travel within the previous 12 months.

Travel booking apps like Skyscanner, Hotels.com, TripAdvisor, Trainline and dozens of others have seen their user bases and revenues soar in the last several years as customer preferences have migrated to real-time, on-the-go bookings and research on smartphones - particularly as mobile apps have gobbled up smartphone usage time from the once-dominant mobile browsers. This has helped fuel the rise of last-minute booking apps like Hotel Tonight, Jetsetter, Hopper, Roomlia and others.

Yet Neumob’s study also found significant frustration and concern with the load times and in-app performance of mobile travel apps, with 63% of respondents saying that they’d already deleted travel apps from their devices for this reason. The study also found that 84% of travel app users expect the app to load within 3 seconds or less, with 51% expecting load times below 2 seconds. Moreover, 37% of US/UK consumers reported that when a travel app takes too long to load, they’ll typically close the app and open other, often competing apps instead.
