EMSL’s Three Lab Locations Equipped and Staffed to Handle Lead and Copper in Drinking Water Samples

Last year, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) reported that over 5,000 drinking water systems in the United States violated the federal law for lead levels in water supplies. After 1,110 community water systems were analyzed, it was revealed that over 10% of the homes tested had lead levels of 15 parts per billion (ppb), which is over the action level established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

In 1991, the EPA started enforcing a lead and copper rule for public water supplies. However in recent years, issues with drinking water systems have brought to light higher than acceptable lead and copper levels in drinking water across the country.

“Corrosive water can leach lead from pipes and plumbing fixtures,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead was often used in the past in household plumbing materials or in water service lines. A prohibition on lead in plumbing materials has been in effect since 1986, but several cities have old water services lines and countless properties built before the ban.
