Once retirees discover what their purpose is, the decision making process becomes clearer. Retirement doesn’t mean people need to go cold turkey when it comes to working

What happens when retirement becomes boring? The idea of endless days with little to occupy one’s time can be enough to bore anyone.  One way to make the adjustment to retirement easier is to keep busy and leading retirement coach says starting a business can be just the ticket to a new lease on life.

As people spend decades living a busy life, retirement can pull them to slow down before they are really ready, and tis slow down can take a toll on their health. A 2013 Institute of Economic Affairs study in 2013 said retirement increases the risk of suffering from depression by about 40 per cent.* Leading retirement coach, Ann Nelson says there should always be a sense of purpose because without it, one is lost.

"Once retirees discover what their purpose is, the decision making process becomes clearer. Retirement doesn’t mean people need to go cold turkey when it comes to working,” Retirement coach Ann Nelson of Ann Nelson Enterprises said. “Many people choose to slowly transition, while others decide on living a life of semi-retirement.” www.annnelson.com.au

With the ever-ageing population, retirement in the new millennium has no hard and fast rules, as every person is different, “You don’t need to change the world or save the planet,” retirement coach Ann said. “You just need to enjoy the last part of your journey, and ensure you remain vital and excited about life" www.annnelson.com.au

Planning and preparation during the pre-retirement years can be a huge benefit as people contemplate what reinventing yourself after 50 might look like. One of the successful retirees Ann has coached is David Hine, an independent member of Herbalife who embraced starting a business in retirement.

Born in South Africa where he attended primary school, David moved to Australia in 1961 where he finished high school. He worked for about 10 years in different fields and was in the hearing services for the next 30 years. He likewise was selling insurance, real estate, relocatable homes and confectionary.

David heard about Herbalife, but had never used the product. After retirement, when he and wife Valerie got sick of sitting around doing crossword puzzles, Sudoko and watching TV, he started a charity program in Nepal to provide free hearing services to the locals. Valerie thought of finding a part-time job to finance the hearing clinic, but found Herbalife instead, and urged David to be involved. David tried the weight loss program and succeeded after three months.

David then joined the Herbalife business and introduced it to his twin brother Peter.

Peter was shorter than David and was grossly obese, needing to shed at least 25 kilos. However, he was opposed to any discussions about weight loss, until one Christmas he realised he needed help and asked David and Valerie if they could help.

David put his brother on the weight loss program and Peter’s results were amazing - losing nearly a kilo a week. By mid-year after his ‘Christmas awakening’  he had lost over 20 kilos.

The most exciting part about David’s new retirement ‘career’ is being his own boss and seeing in people health improvements. He still prioritizes his hearing project in Nepal, and remains a member of Rotary International and Toastmasters International.  He credited his confidence when interviewed by Ann to the latter.  Listen to his interview here. http://annnelson.com.au/retire-well-retire-happy/the-podcast/29-bored-in-retirement-learn-what-one-retired-couple-david-valerie-hine-did.html
