Beginning in May, the main library at a California state university was closed to students and faculty as asbestos abatement activities began. The library will remain closed until August as the asbestos found above ceiling tiles is removed on the first floor, lower level and breezeway.

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was added to many products to strengthen them and to provide heat insulation and fire resistance in the past. Most modern building materials used today do not contain asbestos. However, until the 1970s, many building products and insulation materials used in residential, commercial and institutional buildings did contain asbestos.

If asbestos-containing materials are disturbed or become friable with age, asbestos fibers may be released into the air which can then be inhaled by people. Exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. The risks of developing these conditions from exposure increases with the amount and type of fibers inhaled. These diseases may not appear until many years after the asbestos exposure occurred.

“You cannot tell whether a material contains asbestos simply by looking at it with the naked eye unless it happens to be labeled, which is rarely the case in older buildings,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “When in doubt, treat the material as if it contains asbestos and have it sampled and analyzed. At LA Testing, we offer comprehensive asbestos analysis from bulk materials, dust and air samples. These services are instrumental for identifying exposure risks, monitoring abatement projects and for post clearance testing to ensure a project has been completed safely for future building occupants.”
