How James Went From $14 Per Hour As A Truck Driver To $100 Per Hour As A Caricatures Artist

It’s never too late to go for your dream career. At the age of 43, James Thomas, decided to make a major change. He quit his job driving flatbeds, pneumatic tankers and dump trucks in Texas, started a new website, and moved to Florida to draw Caricatures at Disney world. As a truck driver, James earned the equivalent of $14 per hour and worked 60-70 hours a week, now he works about 20 hours a week and earns up to $100 per hour drawing gift caricatures and drawing at parties. But how was it even possible to make such a change?

“I didn’t like being a truck driver. There was a lot of pressure to run illegal hours, but I refused to break the rules and put myself at risk. It was decent money, so I stuck with it for eight years,” says James. “Until on one vacation I went to a Caricature Artist convention. I met dozens of artists who were drawing full time and making a good living, drawing caricatures at parties. That experience inspired me to go for it. And when my fellow drivers saw my drawings they began paying me to do drawings for them, and they insisted that I quit driving and go for my dreams, and that’s really what I wanted to do.”

Now James is 46 and working as a full time Caricature Artist, drawing at parties and drawing personalized gifts for people all over the USA. He also works at Disney World in Orlando Florida, and has been voted the #1 Caricature Artist in the Orlando area for two years in a row by thumbtack.com. He’s quick to tell anyone to never give up on their dreams. He’s an example of taking a hobby that you love and turning it into a fulfilling career.
