Paul Maruyama focuses on the efforts of his father and two other men in taking home 1.7 million Japanese nationals from Manchuria during World War II in his book, Escape from Manchuria.

At the end of World War II, the Soviet Union invaded Japanese-controlled northern China, then called Manchuria. Abandoned by the Japanese government and imperial army, three courageous men risked escape to Japan to save 1.7 million people from cold, hunger, disease, and brutality.

Retired US senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell says, “What a wonderful legacy Paul has left, not only to his own family, but to generations of people to come in two of the world’s great nations, Japan and the United States.”

Escape from Manchuria serves as a reminder to everyone that, despite coming out from a tragic war, peace has been kept between America and Japan because each has treated the other with the utmost respect and understanding.

The book was featured in LitFire Publishing’s booth during the Seoul International Book Fair from June 15 to 19, 2016, at the World Trade Center, Seoul, South Korea.
