In May, health officials reminded the public of tickborne diseases with the recognition of May as National Lyme Disease Awareness Month. May is an especially important time of the year to stress to people the need to prevent tick bites as warming temperatures have many people enjoying the outdoors and ticks become active.

Although there are many diseases transmitted by ticks, Lyme disease is one of the most recognized by the public. It is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports, “Most humans are infected through the bites of immature ticks called nymphs. Nymphs are tiny (less than 2 mm) and difficult to see; they feed during the spring and summer months. Adult ticks can also transmit Lyme disease bacteria, but they are much larger and are more likely to be discovered and removed before they have had time to transmit the bacteria.”

In addition to Lyme disease, the CDC reports the following tickborne diseases in the United States:

  • Anaplasmosis
  • Babesiosis
  • Borrelia mayonii infection
  • Borrelia miyamotoi infection
  • Colorado tick fever
  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Heartland virus infection
  • Powassan disease
  • Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever
  • Southern tick-associated rash illness
  • Tickborne relapsing fever
  • Tularemia
  • 364D rickettsiosis

“People need to recognize that tick bites can be a serious issue due to Lyme disease and other health concerns especially during the summer months when more people are outdoors,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “To help people identify exposure risks, EMSL offers Borrelia burgdorferi testing from ticks and offers a Lyme Disease Tick Test Kit. PCR-based DNA analysis is used to analyze the tick and if the results come back positive for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi, medical professionals could then be contacted to begin the appropriate treatment options.”
