Go Back in Time to 1850s Baltimore, Maryland, Kensington Plantation

Last April 12, 2016, to April 14, 2016, the London Book Fair was held at Olympia, London. Among a large gathering of book lovers, authors, and publishers, author Kathy Tilghman exhibited her new book, Slave to Freedom, at LitFire’s booth.

Sarah Laughlin, a poor orphan from an Irish potato farm, moves to America to care for her grandfather, only to be met by slavery. Her grandpapa introduces her to life in Baltimore, proslavery and abolitionist politics, the Underground Railroad, and plantation living. Later, Sarah meets a new character, Matilde Kensington, at a family-owned plantation. The two grow to become wonderful friends. Despite opposition, Sarah introduces Matilde to a world of reading and her right to fight for freedom. Around this time, the Fugitive Slave Act of 1852 was imposed.

“This book captures the issues back then on flagrant black slavery, and from it emerges a beautiful friendship that overcomes racial and spiritual bondages, ultimately moving the reader,” states an inspired reader.

About the Author

Kathy Tilghman began researching Slaves to Freedom while writing her book A Vision of Freedom: African-Americans and the United States Capitol. She became fascinated with stories of survival on the Underground Railroad and with tales of Irish immigration to the United States during the 1850s. She lives in Parkville, Maryland, and is working on the sequel to Slaves to Freedom.
