“When my brother retired, he was not a well person. I realized that I had to provide the right people and care for his well-being. It was a different situation then when I was a Junior High English teacher,”

A health problem, be it physical or mental, should be regarded equally serious by the people involved around the loved one. The problem with a mental disability is that not many see it as a serious ailment, often looking down on it as if it were a personality defect. Do you have someone close to you who is going through a mental disability? Can you genuinely empathize with this person?

Rosalie H. Contino PHD, in her new book entitled As Life Goes On: Lessons One Doesn’t Want To Have To Learn, brings us into a true-to-life series of events, both exasperating and rewarding of the author’s brother Robert “Bob” Contino, a retired 61-year old man diagnosed with a mild case of schizophrenia.

In its pages, you will get to read about how Rosalie cared truly for him but often times couldn’t help but let patience pass by her. Bob’s schizophrenia took to a worsening downhill as further lab tests revealed more and more critical signs of mental illness manifestations. But despite his peevish sarcasm, coupled with his bouts of irritation and grueling pain, the author took much of her time and provided much genuine effort and care to a brother that was dear, a care she promised to fulfill to her parents. It is a book not always of joyous sibling bond moments, but of challenging to nearly quitting events, and most of all, it is a book about the devotion of a loving sister. She reflects on all of them warmly with no regrets. She teaches about true, constant care despite the painful realities a family member or friend has to endure.

“When my brother retired, he was not a well person. I realized that I had to provide the right people and care for his well-being.  It was a different situation then when I was a Junior High English teacher,” states the author.

Written in a painfully reminiscent, emotional tone, As Life Goes On: Lessons One Doesn’t Want To Have To Learn is a cherished novel readers will cherish and take a new warmth from. These are lessons of understanding, patience and commitment, among many other values.
