My mother’s is a story that needed to be told. She was a kind, brilliant, and talented woman all of my life until dementia took hold, distorting her persona and leaving an agitated, bewildered, and compromised person in its wake."

Can you imagine a loved one to suffer from a mind-disabling, body-inhibiting disease that can destroy your relationship forever? Are you prepared to face the possibilities?

Elaine C. Pereira takes us on a poignant journey in the past of a heartbreaking but warm story of her mother’s painstaking decline in thinking, judging, and communicating as dementia ravages her once-vibrant heart and mind. In her new book, I Will Never Forget: A Daughter’s Story of Her Mother’s Arduous and Humorous Journey through Dementia, we get to laugh, cry, and even rejoice as we discover the unkind stages and the terrible grapples loved ones experience when the ones they love are trapped by an unforgiving illness. But this phase is also a phase of discovery.

In its pages, we are taken into a narration of the author’s childhood and teenage recollections alongside her mother’s fond and brave character. Betty Ward was a fascinating woman. But fast-forward decades later, we see how the illness slowly takes away Betty’s once-lovable persona and instead replaced by bouts of paranoia, irritable tendencies, and absurd behavior. But Betty Ward does so well to cover this up, taking Elaine much time before she figures out the truth. We get to witness the unbreakable bond between a caring daughter and declining mother. We get to see the harsh, awful realities the illness presents. We also get to see how Betty Ward, before she passed, made a remarkable move to change her last few days. We witness this amazing woman who once lived a brave, beaming life.

“My mother’s is a story that needed to be told. She was a kind, brilliant, and talented woman all of my life until dementia took hold, distorting her persona and leaving an agitated, bewildered, and compromised person in its wake,” states the author.

Humorous, honest, poetic, deeply moving, and powerfully told, this story is a story that will touch hearts and stay there for a long, long time. It will also offer guidance to those who have a loved one with the illness.
