The presence of rodents in a home, office or school can also cause allergic reactions in building occupants and for many who suffer from asthma, they could trigger an asthma attack.

Puerto Rico’s tropical climate makes it an ideal habitat for many types of rodents, including those that infest people’s homes and commercial buildings. Unfortunately, the presence of rodents can lead to both property damage and health concerns for building occupants.

In addition to chewing through wood, insulation and many other building materials, rodents are known to gnaw at electrical wires. These actions could result in a dangerous and costly fire. Rodents are also known to chew through water and drain pipes which could result in flooding and water damage as well as sewage contamination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that rodents carry many pathogens that can be harmful to humans. In fact, the CDC states, “Worldwide, rats and mice spread over 35 diseases. These diseases can be spread to humans directly, through handling of rodents, through contact with rodent feces, urine, or saliva, or through rodent bites. Diseases carried by rodents can also be spread to humans indirectly, through ticks, mites or fleas that have fed on an infected rodent.”

Some of the diseases transmitted directly to humans include: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, Leptospirosis, Lymphocytic Chorio-Meningitis, Plague, Rat-Bite Fever, Salmonellosis and Tularemia. A partial list of diseases indirectly transmitted by rodents include: Babesiosis, Lyme disease, Rickettsialpox and Relapsing Fever.

“The presence of rodents in a home, office or school can also cause allergic reactions in building occupants and for many who suffer from asthma, they could trigger an asthma attack,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Identifying rodent allergens in a property is a critical step in determining if a building has a problem. At Zimmetry, we offer environmental pathogen and rodent allergen testing services that can be instrumental for people with asthma or allergies working or living in a potentially infested property. This and other indoor environmental testing services can also be highly beneficial for those looking to buy or lease a property so they understand the indoor environmental issues they may face.”

Zimmetry recently sponsored an educational video about rodent infestations, property damage and indoor environmental concerns that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/0oiH1jj8ELU
