Ocean First Education’s Marine Science Course Approved to Meet the University of California’s Admission Requirements

Ocean First Education, offering digital marine science curricula for grades K-12, today announced that its full-semester course Marine Science 101 fulfills a science requirement for admission to the University of California (UC).

Approved for its quality and rigor by UC faculty, Ocean First Education’s Marine Science 101 course offers students access to proprietary interviews with world-renowned scientists and the latest marine science research. The course, which can be facilitated by an educator or taken as a self-directed class, requires students to actively participate in the learning process through scientific inquiry using critical thinking skills, data analysis and explanation construction based on their observations. The course includes six units, each with a user guide, student guide, online assessment, and offline activities and labs.

To meet the UC admission requirements, known in California as the “A-G” requirements, Ocean First Education’s Marine Science 101 course was reviewed by UC faculty to ensure it was designed with the explicit intention of developing and encouraging scientific habits that are needed for university-level studies. The review also confirmed that the course was aligned with all eight practices of science and engineering identified by the National Research Council Framework (NRCF) and detailed within the Next Generation of Science Standards (NGSS).

Those eight practices include asking questions and defining problems; developing and using models; planning and carrying out investigations; analyzing and interpreting data; using mathematics and computational thinking; constructing explanations; engaging in argument from evidence; obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information.
