The massive wildfire that blazed across Alberta has torched hundreds of thousands of acres and forced the evacuation of over 90,000 area residents. At last count, over 1,600 homes and businesses have been destroyed by the wildfire as hundreds of firefighters battle to contain it.

While many homes and buildings have tragically already been lost to the fire, many more have been impacted by the tremendous amount of smoke it generated that has drifted for many miles. In fact, there has been so much smoke from the Fort McMurray fire that it has been easily observed from satellite images.

Wildfire smoke is filled with combustion by-products that include soot, ash and char that can travel long distances and have damaging effects to the properties they impact. Odors, discoloration and “ghosting” effects can result when these combustion byproducts make their way into buildings and onto surfaces. Their presence can also cause etching and corrosion.

“Smoke residues can have damaging effects to both properties and human health,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Smoke damage is covered by many property insurance policies, but it often requires proof of damages to settle insurance claims. This is frequently left to the property owner. Analyzing samples for smoke damage takes true expertise and access to advanced instrumentation. The scientists at EMSL are experts at smoke damage and soot testing services to assist property owners, environmental experts and insurance adjusters following a wildfire. EMSL even offers a user-friendly Fire and Smoke Damage Test Kit for consumers.”

EMSL has also sponsored an online video about wildfire smoke damage to homes and buildings that can be viewed at: http://youtu.be/c0ksscTorHI.
