When someone is experiencing anxiety, it can be a real struggle for them, and really difficult on their partner as well. There’s a lack of understanding around anxiety, because it can bring up fears in the person supporting them too, like feeling out of control and hopeless.

In Australia, an alarming number of people are suffering from anxiety, with younger sufferers on the rise, according to Beyond Blue website.* Whilst experts agree that the prevalence of anxiety is rising, they are not in unison when it comes to discussing causes and healing solutions, due to each person’s illness being so unique to them and varying widely from person to person.

Those who experience anxiety themselves could be overwhelmed, angry or scared but in the case of their partners, supporting a partner with anxiety is a difficult thing. Partners are likewise confused, frustrated, and can feel out of control and helpless themselves, as they watch their loved ones suffer, without knowing how to exactly help or participate in their recovery.

“When someone is experiencing anxiety, it can be a real struggle for them, and really difficult on their partner as well. There’s a lack of understanding around anxiety, because it can bring up fears in the person supporting them too, like feeling out of control and hopeless.” Sandy Hounsell, transformational soul healer and mentor of Anxiety Gold Coast said. www.sandyhounsell.com

Living with someone with anxiety is complicated. Anxiety is scary as it makes the patients isolated, as the patients believe no one understands what they are going through. Making decisions is for them a scary thing as they lose faith in themselves. They feel they are in the dark and need the confidence and strength to get out of that.

According to Sandy, anxiety constantly occupies their mind, even if they are distracted, it is still there, working in the background like a horrible virus that will not leave. The patient can feel sorry for themselves, think they are a failure and may hate everyone. www.sandyhounsell.com

For people whose partners are suffering from anxiety, Sandy gives the following tips so to give them an understanding what causes anxiety:

  1. Mindful awareness

If practiced well, this creates understanding and compassion. It is when the partner of the patient identifies his own fears and feelings around the patient’s anxiety and make sure they do not get in the way of helping him.

  1. Let the patient own the anxiety.

It is important for the partner to take a step back and understand anxiety is not their issue. It is allowing the sufferer to own it and support them through it. It is important for the partner to be aware of their own feelings and how anxiety impacts them.

  1. Listen.

The partner should let the patient talks about the anxiety but not overdoing it. The illness is a fear of feeling, hence, talking about such feeling is part of the healing process but talking about it too much can create imbalance and makes the illness worse.

Sandy said there is a need to reinforce how much the anxiety patient is being loved and cared for, that the partner is there for them and ready to work through it together. The partner should be gentle and use a tone they would use for a young child.

“Don’t judge them or try and draw conclusions. Don’t tell them who they are and what they should do. It’s difficult to make sense of anxiety for the person suffering, so when they hear things like this it just puts more pressure on them.”
