Puerto Rico’s Building Science Experts Identify Cat Allergens and Other Airborne Contaminants

Zimmetry Environmental provides air and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) services to identify allergens, irritants and asthma triggers.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico – WEBWIRE

Cat dander happens to be one of the smaller common indoor allergens. This means it can remain airborne for an extended period of time and eventually settle throughout a large area within a home or building.

The cats of Old San Juan are famous with both residents and tourists who visit the historic colonial section of the capital of Puerto Rico. Cats are also common pets in many homes and apartments throughout the islands.

Unfortunately, one of the major reasons people give up their pet cat is due to allergies. While millions of people suffer from allergies, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that as many as 30% of people with allergies have allergic reactions to cats and dogs, and cat allergies appear to be about twice as common as dog allergies. Cat allergens could even trigger an asthma attack in some people with the condition.

Cat fur is not generally the allergen culprit, although it can collect cat allergens that are primarily found in dander, saliva and urine. A cat’s fur can also accumulate other common allergens such as pollen, dust mites or mold.

Cat allergy symptoms vary from person to person, but common symptoms may include:

  • Stuffy nose, sneezing and nasal congestion
  • Coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath
  • Inflamed or watery eyes
  • Skin rash

“Cat dander happens to be one of the smaller common indoor allergens,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “This means it can remain airborne for an extended period of time and eventually settle throughout a large area within a home or building.  This can cause problems for allergy sufferers and even for people who are looking to rent or lease a property that previously housed cats.”

People in Puerto Rico who are concerned about the possible presence of cat allergens in their existing home, potential future home or business can turn to the indoor environmental quality experts at Zimmetry Environmental. Zimmetry offers indoor testing for not only cat allergens, but also for dog, rodent, cockroach, mold, latex and other common allergens and irritants. They also recently sponsored an educational video about cat allergens and indoor environments that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/xgcoIcs56K4
