Adoption: What Happens in a Family?

Helen Austin cooperated with LitFire to present her captivating book, Bittersweet: One Family’s Experience in Adopting an Older Child, during the recently concluded Tucson Festival of Books. This book chronicles the story of how Helen Austin and her family faced the joy and unexpected challenges of adoption.
 
Austin and her husband already had a biological son when they decided to adopt a “hard to place” older child. Though the couple wanted it to work well, adoptions may present soul-searching surprises. Helen reiterates their experience through this book. She shares the five phases involved in adopting an older child and hopes that it will serve as comfort and guide for others.
 
This honest narration of a bittersweet experience allows readers to glance at the emotional journey of adoption. Austin also hopes her journey will give reassurance to those who are on the same path.

About the Author
Helen Austin, RN, LCSW, was born in Toronto, Canada. She graduated from the Hospital for Sick Children and has a postgraduate degree in education in public health from the University of Toronto. She also earned her MSW from the University of Connecticut. Helen worked as a school social worker in Protective Services and Adoption Agency and, later, as a therapist at a pastoral mental health clinic.
