Contractor Penalized for Improper Asbestos Removal
EMSL Canada offers asbestos testing services to help with building demolition and remodels.
In January, a Canadian contractor was convicted of illegally dumping asbestos-containing material as well as wearing improper protective apparel during the removal. The home he was hired to remove asbestos-containing insulation from was not properly sealed in order to prevent asbestos from potentially entering other areas of the residence. It was also discovered that the asbestos-containing material removed was not stored or disposed of correctly.
Exposure to asbestos can lead to health issues such as lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. Asbestos was used in homes built before the 1970s for a variety of materials including tiles, vinyl flooring, ceilings, and pipe insulation. When these items are disturbed, tiny asbestos fibers may be released into the air. It is exposure to these tiny fibers that can affect an individual’s long-term health.
“Asbestos removal is regulated because of how dangerous exposure can be,” stated Ed Cahill, Vice President of the Asbestos Division at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It may take years for effects of exposure to appear. For this reason, it is extremely important that asbestos be handled properly. Those working with asbestos containing materials should wear the correct safety gear; follow prescribed procedures and need to properly dispose of asbestos. At EMSL, we offer sampling supplies, protective gear and testing services for asbestos in bulk materials, dust, water, and air samples.”
EMSL Canada’s five testing laboratories located in Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver offer asbestos analysis as well as a wide range of additional testing services.
