Emotions, or our own shortcomings, can lead to transgressions with devastating results—or to the hope of a new life.

“All human beings struggle to live with our own missteps.” This statement introduces the theme of Hilary Orbach’s gripping collection, Transgressions and Other Stories. Orbach takes a close, unsparing, yet compassionate look at the desires and quandaries of contemporary men and women, looking straight to the heart of emotions that will resonate with all of us.

Two children live uneasily with an unreliable mother—Martha and Jerry, each divorced, try to ‘cross over’ into a new relationship—Laura, a young widow, is surprised by a romantic encounter in an airport—A suburban couple wander into an affair. Any step taken can be a misstep. Emotions, or our own shortcomings, can lead to transgressions with devastating results—or to the hope of a new life.

Orbach, a psychotherapist, is attuned to the wishes, conflicts and disappointments all human beings suffer, and takes a perspective that is clear-eyed but allows for compassion and self-forgiveness. Her fundamental message offers the ever-present possibility of renewal—as when the last couple of the book—the new lovers, “are graced with the runner’s high” and “move like hopeful messengers through the darkness.”
