It also delves into Pushkin’s fascination with dueling and his issues with religion.

M.A DuVernet has probed into the life, death, and legacy of Alexander Pushkin – arguably Russia’s greatest poet.

In Pushkin’s Ode to Liberty, DuVernet examines Pushkin’s poems and letters. She details his contributions to Russian literature and education, accomplishments during his exile, and his tribute to his comrades during the Decembrist Uprising. DuVernet even went to Pushkin’s home in Saint Petersburg, Russia to rediscover his roots and his influences.

It also delves into Pushkin’s fascination with dueling and his issues with religion. There are also insights into the vastness of the country, its history, its people and its struggle with its neighboring countries.

In Pushkin’s Ode to Liberty, M. A. DuVernet elaborates on:

  • His struggles with  the autocracy and his role in it
  • His life and loves and where he found inspiration for both his poetry and prose
  • Where Romanticism was in vogue, he developed his own literary genre known as Realism
  • His masterpiece novel in verse “Eugene Onegin” gave rise to the woman’s voice on matters of love
  • His struggle with freedom of speech and censorship
  • His exploration of atheism as he saw hypocrisy in religion
  • His turning point regarding faith as he examines the Christian and Muslim religions
  • His fascination with his black maternal great-grandfather who was brought to Russia as a slave
  • His insights into the craft of telling a story to inspire others

“This book began as a movie script when I was a film student in 1989. The wish to bring Pushkin’s story to light in a way that had not been told before was a project of love,” DuVernet expresses.

DuVernet’s unceasing fascination enabled her to solve the mystery surrounding Pushkin’s death. Until now, no biography or novel written about Pushkin’s life reveals the source of the anonymous letter that led to Pushkin’s actions during the last days of his life.

Pushkin’s Ode to Liberty was available to publishing professionals and book enthusiasts at the 2015 Guadalajara International Book Fair, which was held last November 28 – December 6, 2015 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
