The American Board of Industrial Hygiene® (ABIH®) applauds the efforts of industrial hygiene professionals helping in the aftermath of Midwest floods.

CIHs offer crucial support in managing the risks associated with rebuilding with their knowledge of air sampling, chemical and biohazards, community exposure, health-risk analysis and work environments.

The Mississippi River and other waterways across Illinois and Missouri finally began to recede earlier this month after the region was inundated with heavy rain.   Over a foot of rain fell in some areas causing rivers in the region to overflow their banks to levels not seen since the historic floods of 1993.

Numerous homes, businesses, schools and other institutions suffered severe damage from floodwaters that reached the ceilings of some structures in low lying areas. Many buildings even on high ground suffered water damage due to leaking roofs.

As floodwaters receded, area residents began the process of assessing the damage, cleaning up the mess, and rebuilding their homes, businesses and communities.  People have been advised to be aware of potential health and safety hazards that may now be present in these damaged buildings.  Residents, employees and even restoration professionals now helping with the aftermath could be exposed to everything from raw sewage and bacteria to mold in flooded properties.  Older buildings that suffered damage could also contain lead-based paints and asbestos hazards that could be aerosolized during cleanup, demolition and repair activities. Businesses and institutions impacted by the recent events are also subject to altered work environments and industrial processes. This could lead to potential hazards not recognized before the damage took place.

“Certified Industrial Hygienists are experts at helping with these issues and many more because of their comprehensive knowledge base of the many potential hazards that people in the area may now encounter,” said Susan Ripple, CIH® and Chair of ABIH®. “CIHs offer crucial support in managing the risks associated with rebuilding with their knowledge of air sampling, chemical and biohazards, community exposure, health-risk analysis and work environments.  Companies, government agencies, institutions and people who need to contact a CIH® can easily ‘Find a CIH’ in their area or one able to travel to the region by using the roster search on the ABIH® website.”
