Ensuring that all children, regardless of racial, ethnic or socioeconomic background, have fair and equitable access to quality learning experiences is one of the great challenges of our time. Across the country, schools are struggling to fully serve low-income students and students who have been traditionally underserved—including African Americans, Latinos and American Indians—and ensure that all students find a pathway to success. When we hear about the opportunity gap—the disparity in access to the quality educational resources needed for all children to be academically successful—the headlines are usually quite grim. Fortunately, some Washington schools are generating good news. These bright spots are an inspiration to parents, teachers, principals and communities, showing that there are strategies that are working to combat the persistent gap in educational equality and provide students with the skills they need to succeed in school and life.

Pathways to Excellence goes in-depth to recognize and tell the story of inspiring communities of educators and learners that are defying statistics and changing the odds. The Pathways to Excellence Awards are presented with generous support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

About the Pathways to Excellence Awards
The Pathways to Excellence Awards recognize schools that are making progress in creating greater educational opportunity by closing the opportunity gap. These prestigious awards are based primarily on data demonstrating that a school is making measurable progress in addressing one of the greatest educational challenges of our times: the achievement /opportunity gap. Determined in partnership with the Washington State Board of Education and supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Pathways to Excellence Awards focus on schools that excel in tapping the potential of historically underserved populations. Across the nation, schools are struggling to provide equity in opportunity, yet there is a national struggle to fully serve low-income students and students from certain demographic groups—including African Americans, Latinos and American Indians—and lead them to success. Pathways schools refuse to accept the disproportionate graduation rates for these students and find successful strategies that lead to higher achievement and better graduation rates for all. Three Pathways Awards are presented each year for one elementary, one middle school and one high school. These awardees represent the vanguard of educational equity in the state. While the scores of students at these schools may not be the highest, they represent the most dramatic improvements over time.
